5 Minute Speaker:-
Richard Moulton

Against the Odds

Richard gave a touching and inspiring presentation about their daughter Rebecca. Born a tiny premie, the doctor said she was brain damaged, would never walk or live a full life. Boy, has she proved them wrong! She is living a full and colourful life and has excelled academically. Rebecca is productively employed, financially independent and, with family support, has raised her daughter to be a fine young woman. Amazing!

Guest Speaker
Jim Lynch QSM

GUEST SPEAKER:  Jim Lynch QSM spoke about Zelandia. As well as being a talented cartoonist and a former Rotarian (Paul Harris Fellow), Jim is the visionary who came up with the concept that became Zelandia. Together with like-minded volunteers, donors, staff, and in partnership with iwi, DOC and Wellington District and Regional Councils, Jim created Zelandia and ensured it is a successful venture.

Jim told us the story of the evolution of Zelandia from concept to reality; the conservation, economic and community benefits, and the challenges. He had 3 big ideas: urban conservation; a fenced eco sanctuary; community conservation. All have been realised, as those of us who have visited Zelandia or been delighted by abundant tui and kaka playing in gardens and parks all over Wellington city know. Zelandia has become a case study and inspiration for conservationists all around the globe.

Jim now has another Big Hairy Audacious Goal: build a pest excluding fence around the whole Wainuiomata Catchment, 15x the size of Zelandia. Reintroducing native birds that thrive in lowland bush would help to ensure the survival of wonderful endangered species including kokako. Jim’s plan would be to gradually create 12 more eco sanctuaries, effectively lifting  biodiversity across the whole country. The capital investment required is surprisingly modest: $200m and $5m operating costs per annum. It would be awesome to see it realised.

Jim impressed us all with his passion and the number 8 wire ingenuity that has seen Zelandia achieve what many would have thought was the impossible. Thanks Jim and team! Jim and his wife have collaborated on a handsome illustrated book telling the story, available for $40 at Unity Books and Paper Plus Coastlands.
