Rotary is dedicated to fighting and preventing disease. Disease Prevention and Treatment is one of Rotary’s Seven Area of Focus. Disease and illness results in pain and injury. Prolonged severe illness may result in loss of employment and income. It affects families. It affects quality of life.
Rotary and Rotarians are committed to helping people to live healthy lives. Our signature project in this area is Polio Eradication. We have also contributed to vaccinating 100,000 children in the Pacific against common illnesses.

President Ross
Next week is the Christmas party. Set up is from 4pm. Please register guests asap. There will be a 3 course meal, bar and entertainment. Wear red, white and green themed clothing, if possible. Please bring a gift voucher from a store suitable for under 16 year olds, to be gifted to the Women's Centre. Members were generous last year, and the recipients were grateful.
The pensioners' foodbag distribution is a Pak N Save initiative which Mal has secured. Lions and Rotary will help assemble and distribute the bags next Monday and Tuesday 16 & 17 December. Volunteers are still needed. Ross explained enquiries had been made about limiting donations to recipients with a community services card but it would have made it too complicated.

Wood For Good runs for the final time this year next Saturday 14 December. A shunt sheet went round. We will need plenty of helpers and some smoko.

Trailer raffle delivery
Delivered the trailer and rest of the loot from the raffle to Suzanne in Ohau, the lucky winner. She was delighted. The large screen TV was unloaded and she told Bryce their TV had died a week before and a brand new one had just been delivered. We are sure the second one will be put to good use. Thanks again to everyone who sold and/or bought tickets.
Yellow Pages contract
Deliveries will be made in January and early February. Must be completed by 10 February. The maps will arrive in mid December. It will be an all hands to the pump project: we make decent money from this for the Club's projects. A shunt sheet went round and will need to be completely filled. Drivers work with 2 runners/walkers.

Paul inspired us all to greatness
5 Minute Speaker
Paul Adams: Kāpiti Food Fair
Paul gave a summary of the Club's efforts and the stats from the Kāpiti Food Fair. We worked 110 shifts, 270 hours. Al's equipment was invaluable.
The event was bigger than ever, and our increased fee for working the event added a decent chunk of change to our coffers to run our programmes. About 12,125 people attended, which is a decent crowd by any measure.
The carparking was bigger and better than ever, with the church site adding significant capacity, but also challenges. The team dealt with it all with grace.
Having a seasoned team, a good plan and electronic ticketing made things flow better. The ATM crew were onto it and never ran out of cash.
We will need to pull in a partner organisation or seek other helpers next year as it is a lot for Members to work all day in the hot sun.
Paul expressed his gratitude for everyone's input, and the great feedback he had received about what went well and how we can improve things next year. It will be a cashless event next year which will make things easier. He will be glad to hand the torch on to someone else. Well done Paul, expert cat herder!
Ken, taking the job of introducing the guest speaker very seriously
Kevin B is always cheerful
Cherie also received a wee gift for her epic masterpieces aka the Bulletin notes. Cherie, you have set a very high bar!
Who knew trams were so entertaining? Kevin enjoyed the evening
An old Wellington tram
Kevin's passion for trams is contagious. Paul and Ken in fine form
Guest speaker: Kevin Wright
Wellington Tramway Museum
Ken Shilling introduced Kevin, majo domo of the Tramway Museum at Queen Elizabeth Park.
Kevin gave a fascinating presentation about the history of trams in Wellington, and the evolution from smelly, smoky steam engines, to horse-drawn trams, and in 1904, to electric trams.
Trams ran in Wellington from 1878 to 1964, and by the early 1940's, extended to 52.8 km around the city centre and suburbs. They were used extensively, especially in the WWII days, when one year there were 64 million fares!
Coloured lights indicated which tram was coming, and you had to have your wits about you so you got home safely.
The museum was started in 1964 and has a variety of trams and cable car carriages on display, and running around the tracks in the park. The tram rides (4km return trip) are very popular especially with young families. The trams operate weekends and public holidays year round. Visitors are very welcome. Kevin donated a family pass to the Club and it has been allocated to a deserving family.

Sergeant’s Session with Kevin Boyce
A fairly painless session, followed by a singalong medley of Christmas songs. Kevin re-cast the Fawlty Towers Show with Club members. We won't name any names...
