Al Beissel:

Opening thought

Al's opening and closing remarks gave us wit and charisma, brilliantly capturing his vibrant spirit and infectious humor. His words danced with energy, leaving the audience both entertained and inspired, perfectly embodying his  flair.
I guess you had to be there...

Dinner Highlights
We enjoyed a delightful dinner featuring a menu of succulent chicken, a refreshing beetroot salad, hearty roast vegetables, and perfectly cooked potatoes. To top it off, we indulged in a delicious pavlova and rhubarb dessert.

Notices

Richard May

Richard is spearheading our Christmas pudding ($25 each) sales this year. We encourage everyone to purchase these delicious treats, as $8 from every pudding will support Rotary's efforts. It’s a wonderful way to contribute while enjoying a festive dessert! 30 have already been ordered. Please let Richard know how many you want.

Maybe you could order an extra one for the Foodbank??

Steph can attest that if you are short, the puddings last several years on the very top shelf of the pantry and still taste good.

Josie
has one seat available at the Electra Business Awards gala event on 10 October in Levin if anyone would like to join. Message Josie.

Wood for Good

provided an update on our 'Wood for Good' initiative, which continues to thrive. The dedication of our volunteers, combined with the support from Rotary, has been instrumental in achieving our goals. We are grateful for everyone's hard work and commitment.

Rob

shared the success of our recent STEM and youth interviews. It was inspiring to meet such promising young individuals, and we are optimistic about their future contributions to our community and beyond.

Martin

reported on the ongoing support for the Wellington Free Ambulance. Thanks to the generosity of the public, the initiative has been a tremendous success, reinforcing the importance of community support and collaboration. A whopping $234k was raised in total (see message below), an amazing community response given the difficult times many people are experiencing.

RAFFLE SALES

Please make sure you sell your allotted few books, or buy them yourself in time honoured tradition. Ensure you keep all your ticket stubs in good order.

Strattons ahoy! We are reliably informed the Strattons are no longer polywogs. They were accepted by King Neptune to cross the equator after ‘kissing the fish’ ceremony.
As their son Blair said ‘some fish get made into fish fingers but this one was unlucky enough to be kissed by the polywogs!’
Kevin's turn
Kevin Boyce's 5 minute speech was a tour de force

5 minute speaker: Kevin Boyce

Attendees had the pleasure of hearing from Kevin Boyce, who shared an engaging chronological account of his remarkable career in education. Kevin's journey began as a teacher in Christchurch, where his passion for education was ignited. He pursued postgraduate studies, enhancing his expertise and commitment to teaching.

Kevin's career took him to Masterton, where he continued to inspire young minds before embarking on an international adventure in London. There, he embraced various teaching roles and broadened his educational horizons. Upon returning to New Zealand, Kevin became a valued member of the Masterton Club and Masterton Rotary, contributing to the community's growth and development.

His leadership skills shone through when he took on the role of Head of Preparatory at Scots College. During this time, Kevin had a significant conversation with Victor Vito, which left a lasting impact on both their lives.

Kevin's experiences took an eye-opening turn when he worked in Nauru, gaining unique insights into diverse educational environments. He then returned to New Zealand to assume the role of Principal in Miramar, where he continued to lead with dedication and vision.

Today, Kevin resides in Raumati, where he works as a consultant and relief teacher, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with new generations. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from Kevin's journey and dedication to education, which continues to inspire us all.

Thanks Cherie for this faithful reproduction of the speech.

THRILLING NIGHT - 3 NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED!

We are thrilled to announce the induction of three new members into the Kāpiti Rotary Club, each bringing unique experiences and a shared commitment to service.

Frequent visitor Carol Neale joins us with a wealth of worldly experience.  She started work as a trainee nurse before having her family. She moved to Kāpiti in 1975. Carol ran a successful tourist company, taking clients to the exotic locations of Egypt, Jordan and Israel. She has owned and operated 2 successful businesses.

Carol's leadership skills and dedication to service make her a valuable addition to our club, and we are excited to see the positive impact she will bring to our community.  Carol is joining the Youth Committee (yay! - Ed.)

Stephen Fitzjohn has transferred from Petone Club where he was Secretary. Stephen is a financial services advisor. Welcome to the Club, Stephen!

Marcus D'Cunha has lived in Kāpiti for nearly nine years, having emigrated from the UK in 2015 with his wife and oldest child, adding two more along the way. He has worked in real estate for New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty for the past three years. Marcus previously worked in banking and finance in the City of London for approximately twenty five years.

Marcus was an avid sportsman, and now lives vicariously through his children due to a number of injuries from rugby.

Marcus said the following when he applied to join us after being involved as the rep of Sotheby's as a major sponsor of the annual charity Golf Tournament: My experiences of Rotary thus far have been very positive.  I have been welcomed and inspired in equal measure, and hope I get the opportunity to make my own small contribution to such a worthy organisation.

Guest speaker: Janine Sudbury - Impact Leadership

Vic introduced Janine Sudbury (Horse Whisperer and owner of Impact Leadership). Vic made the startling admission that he and Janine had spent time in each other's arms  almost every week about 6 years ago. Janine was helping teach Vic about rhythm. Maryann (a very tolerant woman) was also in the same Salsa Dancing Class, so divorce proceedings were averted.

Janine was originally from London and for a while was a journalist for BBC and a newsreader. She worked for Congress in Washington DC before coming out to New Zealand.

Janine started off by claiming she helped the All Blacks win the Rugby World Cup a few years ago. Not as a fullback: she spoke about her model of Leadership Training using horses and how Steve Hansen had been one of her attendees.

Her process is to match up the attendee with a horse. The human has to build a relationship with the horse and work to a level where the horse is happy to walk across a bridge with their "leader." Part of Janine's skill is to match the horse correctly to the aspiring leader. The first secret of the process is that horses are not fooled by theatrics and posturing and are able to see if their "leader" is being authentic.

Because Steve Hansen was a strong and dominant leader Janine matched him with "Billy" who was a horse with similar characteristics. It took Steve a while to work out how to be impactful with Billy. This is where the second secret of the process comes in - horses give instant and honest feedback. You can't fool horses and they don't waste time being polite to avoid hurting your feelings.

Janine gave several examples of people who had attended her training with little leadership presence in their workplaces and returned to their work with changed behaviours - a strong physical presence built around powerful use of body language and a greater self awareness.

Janine uses horses that are owned by others and uses a profile of the horse and a bio of the attendees to make sure that the horses and attendees are matched to result in a valuable learning experience about impactful leadership.

A very energetic and engaging presentation that received many positive comments. The power poses Janine brought out in attendees have made for some fantastic photos, below.

Update message from Wellington Free Ambulance

This year, more than 450 of you spent over 520 hours on the streets of Greater Wellington and Wairarapa, helping us to raise an incredible $100,800.

In total, Onesie Appeal 2024 raised a Onesie-ful around $234,000!

Every single dollar will go directly towards keeping our vital emergency ambulance services free of charge to anyone in Greater Wellington and Wairarapa. This means we can continue to be here when you need us 24/7, 365 days a year – for free.

The team at Wellington Free Ambulance is so grateful for your time and energy that helped make this year's Street Collection such a success and I hope you enjoyed the experience.
