Opening thought

Matariki karakia

Waipunarangi

May the waters that flow through us Waitī Waitā

bless us;

the earth in her bounty Tupuānuku invite us to share.

Tupuārangi

May the storms that engulf us, Uruangi

serve to gentle and humble us; make us wise.

May our dead in the heavens Pōhutukawa precious as light beyond darkness;

remember and mind us.

Stars gathered as sign,

desire held out and deep -

may newness of season Hiwa-i-te rangi

warm us and wake us

as we pause for rebirth.

Parting thought

It is completed

It is done

We have achieved our purpose

Completed our forum

Let the purpose of our gathering

rest for now

Let the vitality of our discussion replenish

We depart with fulfilled hearts and minds

Bonded in our common goal and unity

Together we affirm!

NOTICES

Josie

Thank you to all members who have contributed to the strategy process, either at the planning session or by responding to the survey. The responses are being collated and there are some amazing ideas.

Next week at 6pm on Wednesday 3 July KCDC is hosting an event, which members are welcome to sign up for - contact Josie. We are hoping to gain some publicity and support for our club and good work through participating in the awards.

Josie really needs another couple of members on the PR and Marketing team, including someone with some social media experience, and if possible an interest in creative design and content creation or marketing background. Stuart needs to transition out of his member communications role. Please contact Josie if you can help out.

Steph

The painting working bee at 2 Queens Road will be held on Friday and gardening on Saturday. Update: the first coat of paint went on, thanks to Bruce, Murray and Paul, and Marilyn, Natalee and Will (friends of Steph's). The gardening was rained off and will be rescheduled to another weekend. BNI is leading the gardening effort but more hands will make the work go faster.

Paul

5 minute speaker: Steph - Variety New Zealand

Steph spoke about one of her passions, child sponsorship through Variety.
143,700 New Zealand kids are living in poverty. As we know from the Dunedin Study, childhood deprivation often has a life long impact on health, social and educational success, and increases criminality, drug and alcohol abuse and intergenerational harm.

Variety runs a child sponsorship programme to support children in need: as well as programmes to encourage increased physical activity and wellbeing.

For $50 a month, New Zealand children receive medical supplies, warm bedding, school uniforms, shoes, school supplies and fees for out of school activities/school camps etc. Sponsors can give more and can make donations for Christmas and birthday food and presents.

President Vic, Cherie and Latu
Latu was truly inspiring
Cherie introduced Latu, who is one of her doctoral students
Cherie and Ross
Anthony conducting his first Sergeant's session
Guest speaker: Tualoaina Latu Toomaga - Wellbeing in Education

Cherie introduced Latu, a teacher, positive parenting advocate, father and fitness coach, currently one of her doctoral students.

Latu was born and raised in Cannons Creek, Porirua. He has taught and worked for years in the community, particularly alongside vulnerable youth. Latu has worked in primary and secondary education. He is currently the manager of 502, the equivalent of KYS in Porirua. After 28 months in operation, they have 1,032 young people registered. Latu also runs fitness training and men's groups in the community.

Latu is researching brain development and becoming a parenting expert, informed by neuroscience. He is diving deeper into these topics with Cheri's expert guidance. Latu has a love for learning and has reclaimed his Samoan language, as well as learning te reo.

Latu spoke to us from his heart, with humility and great compassion. He talked about his own challenging upbringing as one of 13 kids, raised by Samoan parents who loved their children and taught them to respect their elders, but related to and disciplined them in ways that caused them sadness.

At 50 Latu had an epiphany and realised he needed to heal himself and move beyond his trauma and anger. That trauma was the root of his quest for understanding and Latu is now living free and proud. His love for his parents and wider family was clear.

Latu's children are his pride and joy and he has a great relationship with them, and a positive friendship with their mother. Education and therapy have helped Latu emerge as a deep thinker, a kind man with an authentic voice and someone who pays it forward.

Latu bestowed his blessing on Club members for our trailblazing work in supporting young people in the community and the good work we all do. It is our legacy.

Members were greatly impressed and touched by Latu's presentation.
First meeting as President done and dusted!
