Kapiti Rotary has facilitated and contributed to the installation of 3 community AEDs in the past few months.
The Te Atiawa Courts AED is in an area used by many sports codes and visitors. The courts are used by netball in the winter and tennis in the summer, the adjacent fields are for softball and baseball in the summer and rugby in the winter and alongside is the BMX track and a playground.
The Paraparaumu College AED is located at the entrance to the gym which is used by students during school time and by many diverse groups after school and in the weekends. Paraparaumu College Parents’ Association had been fundraising for the AED and Kapiti Rotary was able to donate to the fund and then facilitate the installation with WFA (Wellington Free Ambulance).

The Matai Road Reserve AED is on the outside of the Kapiti Arts and Crafts building beside the Senior Net Kapiti building. Many seniors (and younger) visit these buildings and the adjacent playground area.
Kapiti Rotary has worked in collaboration with other service groups, businesses and locals In all of these installations.
Some of the important facts are:
- Each week on average four people suffer a cardiac arrest in the greater Wellington area.
- Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time.
- 77% cardiac arrests occur in the home, and 23% in a public space.
- 72 % are male and 23% are female
- The average age for men is 63, and for women 67
- Cardiac arrest in children is rare but does occur
